GENERAL TIPS FOR VIRTUAL HIRING FAIR
A Virtual Hiring Fair is No Different Than an In-Person Event. Take it just as seriously. Prepare just as well. You could find your dream job staring at you from the other side of the screen.
CHECK YOUR TECH
The virtual event is web based so downloads are not necessary. Make sure you’re using the most updated version of your browser and that you have a good internet connection. Here’s a service check link to make sure you can access the event without firewall or other issues.

The hiring fair is mainly messaging based but the employers do have the option to request a video chat. This isn’t the main form of communication during the event but you should be prepared in the event they request a video chat.
PRE-EVENT
Prepare Your Intro and Answers.
Write a brief introduction for yourself as well as answers to commonly asked interview questions before chatting with recruiters. This is your chance to craft clear, concise responses about you, your experience, and your goals that you can easily copy and paste into the chat window. Can you demonstrate you’re a valuable candidate? Consider how you will introduce yourself. Explain why you’re interested in each employer. Clearly state what positions you’re seeking, why, and why you’d be a great fit. Each pitch should follow a similar format but should also be unique to each employer.
Know Your Resume.
Do a solid read-through of your resume before the event—employers prefer to hire someone who comes prepared.
Be Ready With Questions.
There are a number of factors that go into a job search. Research the participating employers, prioritize the booths, and prepare questions that are specific to each employer you hope to chat with. Thoughtful questions should be about the company culture and climate, their hiring process, professional and staff development, etc.
DURING THE EVENT
Initiate Chats With Employers.
Each text-based chat is timed to maximize your ability to speak with multiple recruiters. Be succinct with your Q&A during your chat—keep your questions and answers short—sentences not paragraphs! When you first enter a chat know that the recruiter is reviewing your resume, so give them a moment.
Maximize Your Effort.
It’s in your best interest as a job seeker to wait in as many chat lines as possible. Don’t worry, the software algorithm will automatically sort you to the next available line. While you wait, you can check out content the employer has provided in their booth, view resources in the content bar from the lobby, or even do work in another tab in your browser. You’ll hear an audible “ding” notification when it is your turn to chat, so make sure your sound is on.
Use A Proper Area.
Try to minimize distractions while you’re attending the virtual fair. Eliminate background noise as much as possible. Politely remind anyone that will be around not to disturb you while the fair is going on. You want to focus all your energy on getting it right and landing that next great job! Be sure your background is clean and distraction-free. If the chat turns to a video conference, a blank wall is the best choice and try to wear headphones so your interviewer isn’t listening to an echo of themselves.
Look Professional.
A virtual fair should be treated the same as in-person event. Remember, employers do have the option to request a video chat so you should look the part and wear professional clothing. If you’re in doubt, always adhere to this age-old advice: dress for the job you want. Emulate the style of the people who already have the job you’re going after. Look smart, clean, and put together. Appearance can go a long way on a first impression.
Take Notes.
You’ll be taken to a chat conclusion page when your conversation with an employer ends. This page will allow you to rate your chat and take notes about the representative or anything that was discussed.
POST-EVENT
Follow Up.
We know how important follow-up is, so the software lets you connect after the event by saving conversations and contact details from each chat. This is where your chat history and diligent note taking will come in handy. If you were able to grab contact information, make sure to send follow-up and thank you emails after the hiring fair that emphasize your interest! Show excitement for talking to them again soon. Really stamp a lasting impression here. Recruiters talk to lots of candidates at a fair. Leaving your mark shows serious commitment.
